I could not imagine leaving on a cheap to flight Bangkok from the USA and not having credit cards with me and the reason is simple they can literally save your life.  I do not use my credit cards except to book cheap flights and purchases that come out of the west. I sometimes need to buy things like software and other stuff and if it is a US vendor I use the credit card, otherwise I keep them in my pocket.

Credit cards are great as a safety net. If something does happen, many places will not accept foreign travel insurance and will want cash only, so having a credit card will make it so that you have access to cash at any time.  Hospitals or doctors that don’t take travel insurance will many times take credit cards.

Also if you have insurance and you have an accident and need to file a claim, be sure to get it translated before you leave the country, as your insurance company will in most cases not translate it, and if you go to a translator in the US or UK you might pay more for the translation than the claim you are submitting.

Police Stations also will allow you to withdraw money to pay them if you get into  legal problems & criminal charges can many times be avoided if you pay a fine on the spot. think of them as a cheap bail bondman legal and cheap lawyer in one convenient little piece of plastic. Remember the further you go into the system the more that it is going to cost you so taking care of any legal problem on the spot, like getting caught with a very small amount of marijuana.

A person that I ran into in Asia got caught with a couple of joints in Thailand and the local cops asked for 10,000 baht, which he did not have on him and he did not have a credit card, so to jail  he went and into the system where again it gets allot more expensive.  Right away is always going to be your best best. He ended up doing several days in jail, thousands of dollars to get out and expelled from the country for 5 years He was not a very happy traveler ! If he would have had the credit card would have all been over with one fell swoop.
