I was watching the news this morning and they have a lady trapped in an apartment in a Cairo Egypt and the embassy is having a hard time getting to her to help her. That does not surprise me in the least and I might warn you that this is what you should expect if you find yourself in a similar situation.
When I was in Cambodia I had a bad experience so much so that I threatened the local Khmer who was handling my call that if I did not get an American on the phone that when I got out of the situation that I was going to come to the Embassy and and cause a big scene. then finally they put a person on that said to me well it is there country and we are guests but are experience is that MOST Times it will work out very reassuring !
A friend of mine who is a Asia travel writer of note, when he was young was very sick and some fellow travelers from another country took him to the embassy and dropped him off thinking that the embassy would see that he was sick and take care of him He had some bug that gave him a very high temperature and one of the additional symptoms when you are in the throws of a bug that elevates your temperature is halcucaniations so the embassy people with just a very cursory examination by a non medical person was that he was high on drugs and good luck! Finally somebody had a doctor look at him and then they got him into medical care.
The point is this the embassy people live in a fantasy world of big cars, big apartments and houses and guards and big salaries and everyone is very polite and proper and are not in tune with the common man, and if you think for a second that they are going to risk anything to help you, think again!
